A male foreign worker was directing an excavator at his worksite when the ground beneath him gave way. While falling into a 3m-deep trench was unceremonious enough, his luck went from bad to worse when the excavator he was directing earlier also fell partially into the trench.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) dispatched an ambulance, a fire engine, a red rhino and two support vehicles to the scene, and its personnel conducted a rescue mission to save the victim, who was half-submerged in the soil. A crane was also deployed to "lift up the toppled excavator and set it down at a safe spot, before rescue personnel armed with shovels proceeded to free him", according to reports.
As the ground was unstable, the complex operation took 1½ hours to complete, but miraculously, the worker failed to sustain any injuries and was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital as a precaution.
