An unemployed man stabbed himself eight times in the neck and chest, before turning the knife, which had an 11cm blade, onto his female house-mate after his failed suicide attempt. The 39-year-old, who had a history of substance abuse and depression episodes, then held them hostage and threatened to blow the house up with LPG gas if they didn't comply with his instructions. However, his uncle soon arrived and took the knife off him.
Lay Chee Leong, the culprit, was convicted of voluntarily causing grievous hurt, while his female victim, electronic component assembler Wang Aiyan, was given a lengthy medical leave of absence for sustaining life-threatening injuries.
